HW: Film Openings - Research

Inglorious Basterds (Tarantino, 2009)

 


Techniques:

  • Very slow cutting rate
  • Mostly framed in LS
  • High key lighting which shows vibrant colours
  • Nazi uniform, used to symbolise villain and create verisimilitude
  • CUs used to emphasise emotions and reactions of the characters to each other
  • Silence used to create tension
  • Music then used to build suspense to finale                     

 Watchmen (Snyder, 2009)

 

Techniques:

  • Very low key lighting creates a dark feel
  • Almost black and white creates a neo-noir style
  • Blood is highlighted in red
  • Fast cutting rate to create action and excitement
  • Classical soundtrack which is unconventional
  • Diegetic sound used during fight scene of crashing glass, punching sounds etc.
  • Lots of use of slow motion  

 The Dark Knight (Nolan, 2008)





    Techniques:


  • Non - diegetic music is used to create tension
  • Diegetic sounds of smashing glass, gunshots etc.
  • Slow cutting rate before the actual robbery starts
  • Costume masks are used to hide the identities of the robbers, and build up to the surprise at the end
  • CUs of robbers faces to show reaction to man with shotgun
  • Over the shoulder shot on each robber before they are shot by their companions
  • Setting of bank, classic heist/robbery setting
