TW: Film Openings - Research

Kill Bill (Tarantino, 2003)

Techniques:
  • black and white wash- possibly used to show past and present
  • CU used to highlight expression of fear
  • in addition only 2 shots used which emphasises mystery of location and character
  • no non-diegetic soundtrack means that dialogue and diegetic sounds such as breathing, footsteps and the gun click are amplified
  • lots of make up to show blood and bruising highlighting pain of the woman
  • prop hankerchief with "Bill" written on it used to infer that the man is Bill
  • slow cutting rate
 

Inception (Nolan, 2010)


 
Techniques:
  • dense orchestral soundtrack
  • matched cut which breaks continuity editing to create mystery
  • prop symbolic in film but not in real life
  • CU of watch juxtaposed by cross cut to different location suggests events are happening concurrently
  • angelic soundtrack when children in LS suggesting innocence juxtaposed to minor strings
  • short opening title
  • slow cutting rate

Saving Private Ryan (Spielberg, 1998)


Techniques:
  • historical costume representing verisimilitude
  • dense diegetic soundtrack also creating reality
  • slow cutting rate
  • gory make up conveying brutality
  • americans shown in CU whearas army on heavy guns shown as silhouettes positioning audience with americans
  • handicam
  • dialogue in middle of soundmix conveying volume of diegetic sounds eg gunshots, explosions
